Thread (sewn) binding
A very strong, durable type of binding when folded sheets (signatures) are assmbled and sewn together with threads to form a book block. Glue is used afterwards to seal the treads and tighten the spine while attaching cover to the book block. This binding type gives the book a flat opening and high durability. The threads can be selected from a wide range of colors.
Open spine
Also known as exposed spine binding. It is binding type in which the sewn book block is sealed with glue and then front and back covers are attached to the first and last pages of the book block, leaving threads on the spine exposed. It is a modern type of binding with a lot of cover material, construction possibilities and completely flat opening. The color of threads can be chosen from a wide range of colors.
Perfect binding
Type of binding in which folded sheets (signatures) are assembled to form a book block and then the spine is trimmed, roughed up to improve bonding with spine glue and a cover of thicker paper is being attached simultaneously.
Saddle stiching
Also known as stapled binding. It is a binding type in which sheets of paper are folded and stapled together in the middle of brochure with (usually) two staples. This is an economical yet durable binding method that allows a brochure to be opened flat.
Foil stamping
It is a process whereby foil is applied to the surface of the paper giving your project an eye-catching finish. There are translucent foils and pigment foils, such as shiny metalic or matt. Foil stamping can be combined with other finishing processes such as debossing.
Spot UV varnishing
Spot UV varnishing refers to the application of clear, glossy UV coating to a specific area of the print or paper surface to enhance sertain elements and create stronger contrast.
Silkscreen printing
Silkscreen printing is process of trasferring a one-colored design onto a flat surface. This printing method is great for decoration of tactile surfaces, design papers and non-absorbant materials.
Embossing
It is an elevation of a certain design element creating a relief in the paper surface. An embossed pattern is visible on the front side of the paper, while mirrored debossed image is visible on the reverse side. It can also be done in opposite when the embossed image is visible on the back of the paper.
Laminate
Lamination is the process of adhering a clear plastic film to the printed surface to enhance the appearance and provide additional protection against chafing, abrasion or other environmental influences. Laminate film can be glossy, matt, scratch resistant matt, "soft touch" and many different textures.
Edge gilding
You can apply foil to one, two or all three edges of a book block. The gilding protects the inside pages from dust, sun and other environmental influences and is not only an embellishment of your project but an added value as well.
Edge coloring
You can color one, two or all three edges of a book block and give it a matt finish. Edges can be dyed in solid color and graphic images can be printed on also.
Rounded corners
Rounded corners reduce wear and tear on corners of books that are occasionally flipped through such as workbooks or notebooks. When pointed corners are considered the norm, rounded corners can provide a sleek, elegant and modern look.
Dust jacket
It is a detachable cover, which is secured by flaps on the front and back of the book. The dust cover offers additional protection against wear and tear and other environmental influences.
Flaps
It is a portion of a cover that can be folded to the inside of the book. Most commonly flaps are to print additional information, such as the author's profile, the ISBN, the summary of the book, the name of the publisher and the printer and any other technical information. Cover flaps also give a brochure extra durability and resistance to wear and tear. Flaps can also appear on the inside pages.
Colored threads
Threds for sewn bound softcover brochure, open spine brochure and hardcover book can be chosen from different kinds of colors to match the idea or design of the book.
